Sprockets

S-Series T-Series Machined H-Series FL-Series Flangeless

Product Specifications

S-Series Sprockets are used with 1"x 1" and 1/2" x 1" standard duty belts. Flangeless sprockets for standard duty belts are also available. Please consult Keystone for availability.

T-Series Machined Sprockets are for use with True 1/2" x 1/2" belts and include two full rows of precision machined teeth.

H-Series Sprockets are designed for use with all Heavy Duty and Key-Turn belting.

FL-Series Flangeless Sprockets, are fully machined and have hardened teeth to increase belt and sprocket life. Also known as Self-Cleaning they help reduce build-up of debris between the sprocket and the belt.

Sprocket Selection

Sprocket Driven systems provide a positive drive of the belt and help maintain belt alignment. Sprockets systems are generally lower cost than pulley drive systems.

Center to center spacing should not exceed 6 inches. In heavy load conditions, spacing should be as close as possible. Sprockets placed greater than 6 inches can lead to premature belt failure due to excessive strain on the connecting rods.

All drive sprockets should be keyed in-line. Tail sprockets should have plain bores, except the middle sprocket which should be keyed to assure shaft rotation. Plain bore sprockets should be collared to prevent lateral movement.

Pulley Driven systems provide a friction drive which evenly distributes the drive tension across the belt and does not subject the belt to rod wear as in sprocket drive systems. To prevent tracking problems, friction driven belts must be run on an accurately aligned conveyor. Use only lagged, flat faced pulleys with this type of drive.

Sprocket Materials

Cast Iron: Cast iron is the most common material for flat wire belt sprockets. All sprockets are accurately cast from high grade iron.

Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is ideal for food and high temperature applications. Either investment cast or machined from T-304 stainless steel, stainless steel sprockets provide greater accuracy and a uniform tooth engagement for longer belt life. T-316L stainless steel sprockets are available on special order.

Plastic: UHMW polyethylene sprockets feature fully machined teeth for precise meshing with the belt, and can withstand continuous temperatures up to 180 degrees.

* USDA Approved for Food Use *

High Temp UHMW Sprockets: Keystone offers high temperature UHMW sprockets as an option. Standard UHMW can handle continuous temperatures up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. High Temp UHMW sprockets are rated for a constant temperature of 225 degrees Fahrenheit and an incremental maximum temperature of 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Keystone stocks these sprockets in a few styles, and can provide others on a custom order basis. Expect a 4-5 week lead time. High Temp UHMW sprockets are designed by the addition of the word HOT after the standard part number.

Special Features

Hardened Teeth: Hardened teeth may be supplied with cast iron sprockets and can increase sprocket life 2-3 times under severely abrasive and heavy load conditions.

Bronze Bushings: These can be supplied for tail or idler sprockets to reduce shaft wear. Bushings are press fitted into sprocket bore.

Cut Down Hubs: Cut down hubs are available for all sprockets enabling close sprocket spacing on heavy load applications.

Special Coatings: Special coatings for corrosive resistance such as cadmium and nickel plating can be furnished for cast iron and steel sprockets.

Machining of Teeth: Machining of teeth to provide clearance for use with 1/2" x 1" modified mesh belts is available.

Square Bores: Keystone can add square bores into plastic sprockets only. Bore tolerance =+.020",-0". Set screws are not included but can be added for an additional price.

Sprocket Location

Sprocket Location Illustration

Proper sprocket location is essential for smooth belt operation. Sprocket teeth must always drive against the connector rods. This is accomplished by locating the DRIVE sprockets so that the teeth are in the odd numbered openings and locating the TAIL sprockets in the even numbered openings.

When mounting sprockets, the long side of the hubs MUST FACE IN THE SAME DIRECTION. Drive sprockets cannot be located in the outside mesh openings in belt specifications S3, H4 and H5. Never use tail sprockets to power another conveyor.

Keyseats & Set Screws

Accurate, aligned keyseats of different sizes can be cut in any sprocket. Factory supplied keyways are accurately located through the use of a jig, assuring uniform tooth engagement.

All bored metal sprockets are furnished standard with one set screw. Additional set screws can be provided for an additional charge. Bored UHMW sprockets are supplied with two set screws standard.

Keystone has tooling for most standard and many non-standard bore and keyway combinations. Consult Keystone for pricing and availability.
